IMPACT OF PRODUCT SUPPLY CHALLENGES AND HERBICIDE RESISTANCE ON WEED MANAGEMENT TACTICS 2021
CPDA welcomes special guest, DR. BRYAN YOUNG, Professor of Weed Science, Department of Botany and Plant Pathology, Purdue University. Product supply issues that started with glyphosate in 2021 are now forecasted through 2022 for other critical herbicides such as glufosinate, clethodim, and possibly several others. Supply issues, combined with a huge price increase for some products, and the continued weed evolution of herbicide resistance should have farmers re-thinking their best weed management options for 2022. Weeds can still be managed, but the approach becomes more complex and deserves progressive planning. A greater focus on soil residual herbicides and adjuvant systems that optimize herbicide applications to ‘stretch’ product quantities are easily justified.

Laurie will be presenting on topics such who is the PPC and PRIA and what does PPC and PRIA do. The Pesticide Policy Coalition (PPC) represents food, agriculture, fiber, pest management and related organizations that support transparent, fair and science-based regulation of pest management. The Pesticide Registration Improvement Act (PRIA) Coalition works to bring new, dedicated funds to the Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Pesticide Programs for more efficient pesticide registration and re-registration activities. THE CRITICAL IMPORTANCE OF RECENT ASTM ACTIVITIES AND HOW CHANGES MAY IMPACT ADJUVANTS!
CPDA welcomes featured guest Scott Tann, North America Business Manager, Agriculture Division, Lamberti USA, as he provides important information regarding the recent ASTM activities relating to Adjuvants. CPDA and ASTM have had a close link together for almost 30 years. ASTM Standard Definitions (ASTM E-609 and ASTM E-1519) related to Pesticides and Tank Mix Adjuvants, have been instrumental in establishing not only the CPDA Adjuvant Standards program but also industry policy and several state regulatory policies. Scott will describe the importance of this and how certain decisions could affect future labeling requirements for Adjuvant Products. INTRODUCTION OF THE CPDA APPLICATION ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM
Featured speakers Susan Sun, Croda, & Jim Reiss, Precision Laboratories describe the CPDA Application Enhancement Program, and its objective to assist growers and applicators to the right size spray droplets for herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides to minimize off target movement and maximize control. The program includes matching the Crop Protection Products to the optimum spray tip and drift reduction adjuvant. A Q&A session includes special guests Dr. Bradley K. THE IMPORTANCE OF ADJUVANT SELECTION IN YOUR 2020 CROP PROTECTION DECISIONS
Presentation by Joe Gednalske, Manager, CPDA Membership and Value Promotion. With literally a few thousand of adjuvants available, selecting a CPDA certified adjuvant is a great way to narrow your search for the best adjuvant. The takeaway was the importance of tank mix adjuvants in maximizing the performance of crop protection products. It is not uncommon to use two or more herbicides in a spray tank, each one having its own adjuvant requirements and a different mode of action. Premium adjuvants result in better performance of the herbicide, help minimize the potential for weed resistance, and lead to more successful crop protection applications.
THE VALUE OF ADJUVANTS WITH FUNGICIDES – PART 1
Part 1 Featuring Steve Roehl, Ag Strategy Manager, Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Cooperative. Steve Roehl discussed some of the challenges in managing fungicide resistance. Over the last thirty years, sugar beet growers lost two fungicide families and now there are concerns over the potential for increased resistance. Steve addressed the problem of sub-lethal exposure which is a precursor for the development of resistance. Adjuvants play an important role in maximizing the application of fungicides including deposition aids, stickers, and spreaders.
THE VALUE OF ADJUVANTS WITH FUNGICIDES – PART II
Part 2 Presented by Joe Gednalske, Manager, CPDA Membership and Value Promotion, CPDA. Joe Gednalske discussed the beneficial role that adjuvants play in the fungicide market. Adjuvant products are important for increasing coverage, improving deposition, enhancing cuticle penetration, and facilitating retention of spray droplets on the plant leaf – key components of a successful fungicide application. Joe acknowledged that the evidence clearly shows the positive benefits that can be derived from the use of these adjuvants. Joe outlined the importance for a clear and consistent message on the value of adjuvants when used with fungicides in tank mixes
AGRICULTURE ECONOMIC OUTLOOK, MANAGING RISK, CAPTURING OPPORTUNITIES
Presented by Kenneth Scott Zuckerberg, lead analyst and Senior Economist with CoBank’s Knowledge Exchange Division. Mr. Zuckerberg will provide a summary of the present state of the domestic farm economy. The focus will be on the U.S. grain sector including the outlook for commodity prices, grain exports, and the related pressures on the ethanol market. He will discuss the current positioning of agricultural retailers and domestic supply chain operations in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Mr. Zuckerberg will also offer his perspective on the opportunities that will present themselves once the pandemic is contained and the economic recovery gets underway as companies adjust to “a new normal.”
